Tropical Sea

Welcome to the "Song of the Oceans" website.

"Song of the Oceans" is a compilation of original songs celebrating the ocean world and the variety of creatures that live there. The project also addresses modern day conservation challenges, as man dramatically interfaces with and impacts this great portion of our world.

Inspiration for this project comes from many sources. Most notably, the writings of marine biologist/author Rachel Carson (Under the Sea Wind; The Sea Around Us; The Edge of the Sea; Silent Spring; and The Sense of Wonder). Her books continue to be relevant in the 21st century, over 50 years since they were first published. The description of the early days of deep sea exploration, as described by Capt. J.Y. (Jacques) Cousteau in "The Silent World" and "The Living Sea," provided further inspiration to this project.

Growing up in the midwest, my earliest literary connections with the sea were in the form of Ernest Hemingway's "The Old Man and the Sea" and Jules Vernes' "Twenty Leagues Under the Sea," books which I read, again, while working on the project.

My personal experiences with the sea including kayaking, swimming, body surfing, deep sea fishing, tide pooling, whale watching, and walking (and running) along the rocky cliffs and rocky shores.

I have been further inspired by my visits to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, my 'home away from home.'

An incredible team of singers, musicians, artists and engineers have joined me in this project, bringing the words to life in an eclectic musical mix of surf-rock, folk, contemporary, bluegrass, swing, blues.
